Beijing Students Visited NCKU, Taiwan.

TAINAN, Taiwan -- With the rising international reputation of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, not only high school students in Taiwan frequently visit the university campus, foreign renowned universities begin targeting NCKU as one of their key visiting schools.

On February 16th, a delegation of 19 students from universities in Beijing, Mainland China, including Peking University, Beijing National Day School, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Capital Normal University, China University of Geosciences and People's University of China, arrived at National Cheng Kung University and participated in a one-day tour.

Accompanied by staff from Extracurricular Activities Division of Office of Students Affairs at NCKU, the students visited Banyan Garden and Cheng Kung Lake, observed various art works exhibited in the campus and lastly took a group photo in front of Ju Ming's Taichi Series sculpture.

NCKU Student Union representative said that the main purpose of the visit was for students from Beijing to have a better understanding of NCKU and to exchange ideas and learning experiences with NCKU students.

Later, the students listened to a speech delivered by Cheng-Li Hsu from Association of Digital Culture, a government-registered and non-profit organization formed by renowned bloggers and Internet users in Taiwan. All participating students had a colloquium on four topics of gender, learning, internet, and economy.

Beijing students did not oppose to sex before marriage because they believe that there should be a trial period before marriage and that sex is an important foundation of marriage. However, gender education was not prevalent in China. They expressed that learning to be professional is the first priority in the university education and should not be left behind for part-time work, though several held that work experience is equally important for future career planning. Despite that the use of the internet is restricted in China, students still try all means to get access to the internet, according to the Beijing student delegates. NCKU student participants held similar opinions with the Beijing delegation in these three topics.

They also shared the same worry about the soaring housing price. Nevertheless, they have different goals and values on life. NCKU students believed they will save money for financial planning and better material life while Beijing students believed saving money for a house is their priority.

Director Bruce Cheng of NCKU Extracurricular Activities Division hoped that the one-day tour can initiate a series of exchange and cooperation between universities in Beijing and National Cheng Kung University in the future.
