CANBERRA, Dec 6 AAP - Former defence force chief Angus Houston has been appointed the
next chair of the nation's air traffic manager.

Air Chief Marshal Houston joined the the board of Airservices Australia on Tuesday
and he will replace current chair David Forsyth from June 3, 2012.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said Air Chief Marshal Houston had an outstanding
career in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and he would bring considerable aviation,
governance and leadership experience to the board.

"His experience will assist the board in the delivery of a five year, $1 billion capital
expenditure program which is replacing and upgrading vital air traffic infrastructure
and improving aerodrome rescue and firefighting services," Mr Albanese said in a statement
on Tuesday.

Mr Albanese said Airservices Australia and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) had
worked closely over the past few years to join civil and military air traffic management
and deliver improved safety and efficiency.

"Over the next decade, this partnership will become much stronger," Mr Albanese said.

"Air Chief Marshal Houston's experience will be invaluable as Airservices and RAAF
work together on a future air traffic management plan for Australia."

Airservices Australia provides air-traffic control services, as well as delivering
rescue and fire fighting services at the nation's major passenger airports.

Air Chief Marshal Houston retired as ADF boss on July 1 following six years in the role.
