QLD: Ex One Nation candidate seeks payout

A disgruntled former One Nation candidate has sought a judicial review into the refusal
by the Queensland Electoral Commission to reimburse his election claims.

Accountant TERRY SHARPLES stood for the Gold Coast seat of his year he won a case in
the Supreme Court for One Nation to be de-registered as a political party because it had
been registered in Queensland by fraud and misrepresentation.

A Court of Appeal decision on the case is expected next February.

As a result of the ruling, $500,000 which was paid to One Nation upon its election
result was due to be repaid to the Queensland Electoral Commission.

Mr SHARPLES, who won 23 per cent of the vote in Burleigh, told a news conference his
electoral outlays of about $5,000 should be repaid by the commission from this refund.

He has applied to the Brisbane Supreme Court for a judicial review.

Under electoral laws any political candidate who wins more than four per cent of the
vote can apply for reimbursement of campaign costs.
