Tas: Little girl perishes in house fire

HOBART, April 25 AAP - A little girl has died in a house fire in Gagebrook, north of Hobart.

Police said details were still sketchy and it was unclear what started the fire.

Sergeant Michael Smith said it was understood the girl was about two years old.

Fire crews were called to the Lamprill Circle house at about 5.40pm (AEST) where they
later discovered the body of the young child.

The child's mother was at the scene.

"There were attempts by another person at the scene to try and save the girl," Sergeant
Smith said.

He also said a number of other children and some adults managed to escape the fire,
but it was still unclear how many there were and what relation, if any, they were to the
victim.

Fire investigators are still at the scene.
